week 5 tute activity/ lecture review /tutespark

This week lecture was talking about consumption and production. Actually, this is really new topic for me, I do not know too much about this subject. Especially, the teacher in the lecture referenced about ' citizen journalism', this is such a new word for me. Because in China, the news is filtered by government, and there is no web-side like 'http://ireport.cnn.com/' web which people can put some news whatever they want. Chinese government looks like have a big ability to control the media in China, however, this situation is getting better recent years. Lets move on to the tutespark in this week.

This week tutespark is talking about
Culture Jamming, and how it to influence people's life. Actually I've no idea when I saw this word, because this is my first time to know it. I was trying to translate this word to Chinese which can make me more easier to understand, however, I am not sure that the meaning of this word correctly.

Culture jamming, a tactic used by many consumer social movements, is a mechanism in which an activist or activist group attempts to disrupt or subvert mainstream cultural institutions including corporate advertising.

Coined by the collage band Negativland on its release JamCon '84, the phrase "culture jamming" comes from the idea of radio jamming: that public frequencies can be pirated and subverted for independent communication, or to disrupt dominant frequencies.

Although the term was coined by Negativland, culture jamming can be traced as far back as the 1950s. One particularly influential group that was active in Europe called themselves the Situationists and was led by Guy Debord. Their main argument was based on the idea that in the past humans dealt with life and the consumer market directly. They argued that this spontaneous way of life was slowly deteriorating as a direct result of the new "modern" way of life. Situationalists saw everything from television to radio as a threat.

The culture jammers are good at getting attention, as in 1992, when Absolut Vodka threatened to sue AMF over its "Absolut Nonsense" parody, but backed down when AMF in turn went to the press and challenged Absolut Vodka to a debate about the harmful effects of alcohol.

3 Examples of culture jam:

Little culture jamming this author did, mocking McDonald's and the fastfood-nation the world is becoming. The author used the images from Super Size Me in another context to make a statement. Music in the second part is All That Remains.

"It is important to bear in mind that political campaigns are designed by the same people who sell toothpaste and cars." Noam Chomsky ----"Politics hates a vacuum. If it isn't filled with hope, someone will fill it with fear." Naomi Klein https://www.adbusters.org/
This is my favorite example of culture jam, the author use funny ad pictures to show people the deep meaning behind those pictures. Some pictures was edited to make another sense, or appropriate to another ads. It can influence people's thinking directly.

The story of this culture jam video is very true and reality, however, it is quite short one. Some people use this one to tell those over-diet girls that it is very important to keep a health body in the future.

This week tutorial task was work in a group and create a new story, and made a film put it on the internet. This is similar like I did before, but this time is more challenge. I did not find a group that I can enjoy in. What a shame. I think I am going to looking for the partners in next week. Actually, I am starting shot some pictures and radio already. The main idea is talk about love, such as dear ones, friendship and love.

Week 4 tute exercise

1.Where and when did usable online video start? (provide some refs. and an example if possible)
A:
Aside from a few notable uses of video by the likes of jennicam, Justin Hall and the archive.org, you could play around with video online, but for the first half of the decade, the audience wasn’t there. As war often begets technology, US political campaigns often begets online trends and with the 2004 presidential election, Howard Dean’s campaign took the online world by storm not just by chatter, but because micro donations became significant and challenged traditional means of hitting up only the established elite.

2.In the lecture we heard about technological innovations that were used by the studios to lure audiences. (mostly to combat the popularity of TV)
What recent innovations are being used to lure us in the movies?
What are they luring us from?
A:3D is being used to lure us in the movies recently.3D use visual impression to lure us. Do you think 3D will be a movie revolution or is it all hype. Tell us below in the SoundOff box.

3.Are short films still being made? Why? Who pays for them to be made?
A:Yes.Short movies are still being made, because it is a way to tell the story to audiences directly. Investors can pay the money for film made.

4.The term viral is thrown about but what does it mean in film/movie arena? Give some examples.
A:It means ' go viral '. Such as videos.

5. Online video distribution isn't limited to the short film format. We are now starting to see television styled shows made solely for internet release (webisodes). Find an example of this style of content and discuss how viewing television content in this way can positively and negatively affect the viewer's experience.
A:People prefer to watch the short movie on line, because it is more convenient which is fastest way to know new things. TV shows limited the content of programs sometimes as well. However, some people are more like watching TV at home.

Some short film also made from individually, because they can use video to speak out what they want to say.

week 4 tutespark

The idea of this short film is absolutely great, and really good shot as well. The story mean something that it can told people to know their life deeply. In addition, this film has a surprise ending which can make people to thinking and guessing. You worth it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on4PH2QAWTo

People can have different understandings through this short movie, this is why I really like this one. It is very hard to live in the current society. Work, family, and social relationship are main issue which can bring big pressure to people's life. And this film is talking about this problem. Actually I don't really understand what is film saying at beginning, but this film makes me want to keep watching, and feel curiosity. I truly like this one.

Personally, I really love this one. Because, the duologue of this short movie has a lot of meanings. They called it ' how god works', maybe it is talking about things go around, and come around. in which ways how god gonna be work. The story was funny and ironic as well.

tutespark and lecture review week 3

This week lecture talked about the history of computers and internet. As a international university student, I am very familiar with internet, because I need to use computer almost everyday, especially this major. In addition, I am very interested in this week topic. Those information can give me a lot of help which can relate to my next step study.

During the lecture time, it is quite hard to write down the lecture notes. Because I can not understand few new words sometimes, and I prefer to listen more then look at the lecture notes after the lecture. The teacher talked about the developed of the computer and internet. It makes me recall when I was young age and study at primary school, the computer and the system was quite difficult and not convenient. Unlike the computer and internet in the past, today's internet is more fast and versatile, there are a lot of types of computers in the shop as well.

How time flies! For week three tutorial we've finished movie production, and we also added music in it which was quite interesting. However, when we translated photos to Mac, there were some wrong with technical problem. We solved those problems finally. That was not bad. Moreover, I am so happy that I worked with two nice girls who help me a lot during the producing time.

tutorial week 2

The tutorial on this week was very interesting, we need to organized as a group and choosed the topic , and then we should taking around 30 pictures which can be make a movie. There are three people in my group, we had the topic ' the late assessment'. We wrote a play which opened our original mind. We've been to library for shoting the pictures, and also we used different shots to make pictures more dramatic, becuase we followed the shoting structures from the lecture. Three of us followed story line, and took the pictures step by step.

I was really enjoy the team work, and we had a good time to cooperate with each other. However, the work is still not finished, so we will be do others in next week. Moreover, we need to finish the movie and put it on my blog and youtube. I think I probably will becoming a start, and I am so lucky that people can not use youtube in China.

Lecture 2

For this week lecture which had much fun, however, it was quite hard for me to catch the words sometimes. I think I may need more time to find teacher's feet, and adapt to the English environment.

Firstly, we started from discussing old and new communication technologies, thinking about the medium of film ,and movies are kind of communication method in our daily life. Actually I am not really big movie fun, but I normally watch some movies in China and Australia. I found out that there are some distinguishing features between Western and East movies' style. Secondly, we also considered about the genre of different movies, such as drama, horror, family, action, romance and so on. The most important point is that the genre of films are cyclical during the movie production. Lastly, we moved on the vocabulary of film, and each individual shot relate to the structure of story, inaddition, each type of shot(e.g. mid shot & wide shot) represents how, why, where, what, when and who. We are going to have practise on the tutorial, and I hope I can do it really well.

The question of this week is "How do different mediums affect our viewing experiences? "Personally, I think movies and T.V shows can influence to people's viewing abviously.
